Our Story

From a Coleman Cooler
to Grand Ice

The story of how a Coleman cooler experiment became Michigan's premier family-built craft ice company.

One Christmas, while preparing cocktails for a themed dinner, Andrew Van Houten discovered the art of clear ice from watching videos on Japanese cocktail culture. Captivated by its precision and clarity, his curiosity quickly turned into experimentation.

Researching the science behind getting the ice crystal clear, he began using reverse osmosis filtered water and directional freezing to make ice blocks in a Coleman cooler in his freezer at home. Using a knife and cutting board he started hand carving each cube in his kitchen to use in his cocktails at home.

Soon after, while visiting Sidebar in downtown Grand Rapids, Andrew noticed their clear ice spheres behind the bar. When he asked where they sourced them, he learned the supplier wasn't local. With such a vibrant and growing cocktail scene, Grand Rapids deserved a locally owned clear ice supplier, one committed to craftsmanship, consistency, and personal service.

In 2021, with support from his family including his brother, Grand Ice was officially launched as a Michigan-based craft ice company serving Michigan's growing cocktail culture.

A true family business from the start, everyone including cousins and grandparents pitched in, with Andrew's brother Carter Van Houten staying on full time as the Chief Operations Officer.

Together, they've built a locally trusted brand known for uncompromising quality and strong relationships with customers and partners.
